Many people are pleasantly surprised when we quote shipping costs for custom metal work.  They think STEEL = WEIGHT = $$$.

We always try to find the most cost effective methods to ship work to our customers.  Depending on where we are shipping to, the cost can vary greatly.

Shipping Cost is calculated based on Distance (97707 to customer Zip), Package Size (Length x Width x Height), and Package Weight.

Distance – We are located in Oregon, so generally we find that ship to west coast states is least expensive through US Postal Service.  But only if it’s a smaller package.  We recently shipped wall art to a customer in California, and FedEx proved to be the best price.  Again – package size and weight were the determining factor.

Package Size – We package most of the wall art in foam board before boxing it up.  This generally results in a 2-3″ height.  The length x width will be determined by the finished piece (which is based on customer requirements).

Package Weight – When estimating package weight, we use the formula used in the steel industry.  A square foot of 16 gauge steel is equal to 2.5 pounds.  We add foam board and box weight on top of that.

We calculate the estimated Shipping cost, then add Handling fees.  Our Handling fees include the cost of packing materials and processing fees.

We recently sent a package that weighed 19 pounds and was 79″L x 13″W x 3″H to Tennessee.  The FedEx shipping cost was $36.  Not as expensive as you might think!  In the last month, we’ve sent packages to Virginia, Florida, Tennessee, North Dakota, California, and Texas.
