Sunriver Metal Works got an unexpected call a few weeks ago from Alisha in La Pine, Oregon. She had seen our card in the La Pine Ace Hardware Store and had been looking for 2 years for someone to make a Fathers Day custom sign for her. Ace Hardware carried some driveway markers for us during the winter season and were nice enough to carry our business rack cards. We gave her our email address (info@sunrivermetalworks.com), so she could send the information and jpeg of what she was looking for.
The Creation Process
First, Alisha sent us a picture (jpeg image) of a sign that she liked, along with an idea of the images she wanted to include in the sign, and size of the sign.
Next, we created a prototype of the sign using graphic editing software and clip art files. The prototype image was saved in a PNG format so she could easily review it and sent back via email. It looked like this.
Changes? No Problem!
Next, she asked if we could change a couple of things and add a few images (square corners, paw prints, and trees). We revised the sign and sent her a new prototype file along with an estimated price. It looked like this.
She approved the prototype and quoted price. We discussed the type of color finish she wanted and where the sign would be located. This was an outdoor sign, so an application of clear coat finish would be necessary.
Cut, Patina, and Finish
Once we cut the sign out, we applied the patinas and clear coat to create the finish she was looking for. The final product looked like this.
Since Alisha was local, we delivered the sign and received payment. The amount of actual time it took to complete the approved prototype was about 2 days. The cut and finish time is dependent on the shop schedule.
The Perfect Fathers Day Gift
The design process from start to finish can be simple or complex depending on the image that we start with. Each sign is truly unique, because steel will take patinas differently each time you create a new item. We also try to meet the customer’s needs for delivery. Alisha’s husband was so happy with his Father’s Day present, that he decided to order another one for a customer. Be sure to look in the gallery for The Hamilton’s sign.
Finally, we want our client’s to be totally satisfied with their custom sign. It’s a fun, creative process that never ceases to amaze us!
