How Do We Use It?
Sunriver Metal Works uses a CNC machine to create our metal work. Here are the steps we take from start to finish.
- Sunriver Metal Works uses bitmap manipulating software called GIMP to create a bitmap file (think each pixel on a photo is a bit) from a jpeg image.
- We combine several bitmap files into vectoring software called Inkscape to create a “dxf” file.
- Then we walk a copy of that file out to the machine, which is controlled by a computer.
- Mike uses SheetCam software to take the vectored file and “map” it out on the sheet of steel.
- Mach-2 software will then generate line by line computer instructions to move the plasma torch from point to point.
- Once the plasma torch has completed the cut out, Mike takes the steel piece to the grinding table.
- The piece is then ground and attachments are welded on before patinas or paints are applied.
- Once sealed, the piece is ready to be shipped out.
